Getting here
From Sarajevo Airport
Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is the closest airport. From there, you have several options to reach Mijakovići. We recommend coordinating transport with us in advance so we can help plan the best route.
Airport pickup
We can arrange pickup from Sarajevo airport or Kakanj. Let us know your arrival time when you apply. Cost is typically 20–50 EUR depending on pickup location and can be shared with other arriving residents.
Rental car
The most flexible option. Cars are available at the airport. Roads are paved all the way to Mijakovići, though the last stretch is narrow and winding. A regular car is fine; 4WD is not necessary.
Bus + pickup
Take a bus from Sarajevo to Kakanj (departures from the main bus station). From Kakanj, we can arrange a pickup to bring you to Mijakovići. This is a good budget option.
Local transport
A village bus connects Mijakovići with Vareš. It departs from the village around 6:30 in the morning and returns around 14:00. This is the main connection for residents without a car.
Beyond the bus, it's sometimes possible to arrange rides with villagers going to Vareš, Kakanj, or elsewhere. These things are coordinated informally. For trips to Sarajevo or further, we can help arrange shared rides with other residents or connect you with local drivers.
Tip: If you plan to do field recording or explore the surrounding area, a rental car is recommended. The landscape is beautiful but spread out, and public transport is limited.
The surroundings
Mijakovići sits at the edge of a valley, surrounded by forests and meadows. The medieval fortress of Bobovac, once the seat of Bosnian kings, is a 900-meter walk from the house. The trail starts nearby.
The nearest grocery store is in Vareš. A mobile shop passes through the village twice a week. Kakanj and Sarajevo have everything for larger shopping.
The area is quiet. The village has about fifty houses, most of them weekend homes. Year-round neighbors are few. Sheep, cows, and chickens wander past the house daily. In summer, the meadows fill with wildflowers. In winter, snow can stay for weeks.
