Mojca Zupančič at the piano

Mojca Zupančič

Pianist · Composer · Intermedia artist
Ljubljana · Slovenia

Her practice begins where music is made in a group: with Tututu Orchestra, the international ensemble she founded in 2021, she has developed a form of conducted improvisation in which openness and a willingness to play together are enough to perform.

Can It Still be Heard Tomorrow?
17 – 31 January 2027 · Mijakovići, BiH

The winter edition of Odjeci, the sound art fellowship at Zvjezdane Staze, goes to Mojca Zupančič, pianist, composer and intermedia artist from Ljubljana. She spends two weeks in Mijakovići, from 17 to 31 January 2027.

Concept

English · verbatim

During the residency, Mojca will observe her experience of arriving in Mijakovići, a village reminiscent of her Slovenian home, seeking to discover the stories, legends, songs and traditions that might allow her to begin developing a sense of belonging to the place. Through encounters with local residents, she hopes to create opportunities for communal experiences that transcend everyday life, nurturing a sense of connection through music. Using familiar source material, such as traditional songs as a starting point, she will use collective music-making tools like gesture conducting to invite others to explore creativity and improvisation. The entire journey, from the beginning of the residency to the eventual presentation months later, will be reflected in a musical composition tracing the shift from a raw first encounter to growing familiarity and, upon returning home, to a memory that gradually fades and erodes over time and distance. Beginning as an impressionistic sonic landscape, the piece will develop towards increasingly intimate and fragile material drawn from encounters with local residents, gradually leaving behind recognisable sounds, voices and songs as they dissolve into prepared piano and electronics. Its final abstract form will reflect its destination: an urban, almost laboratory-like setting where the material becomes a subject for listening, reflection and dissection.

Biography

English · verbatim

Mojca Zupančič (Ljubljana, 1995) is a Slovenian pianist, composer and intermedia artist. Her practice includes composition, improvisation, performance, multimedia and collective-sound making and she is particularly interested in how the initial material (compositional fragments, text, gestures ...) is transmitted, transformed and reinterpreted through various group processes and/or technology. In 2021 she formed an international collective Tututu Orchestra for which she works as artistic director, composer and conductress and has been researching the role of gesture conducting within predefined frameworks. She is active in numerous music ensembles (Miss Amanita Fly, VIRA, Karmakoma ...) , works as a musician in an improvisational theatre and co-leads her show Muzikal at Radio Študent. Mojca holds a degree in Multimedia Studies, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana (2018) and a degree in Jazz Piano, Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen (2023).

After the residency

Work made during the fellowship enters the Zvjezdane Staze archive, and selected pieces later join Zvjezdane·Zvuчne·Staze, the audio walk along the path to Bobovac.

The Odjeci format is presented at a festival in Vienna in 2027. A selected composition appears on Odjeci I · 27, the first release of the series, in summer 2027.

Selected works

2024
Kemenymadar V–VIII The composer Hansko Visser invited her and three other composers to reinterpret one of his works, which draws on the experimental legacy of Ernő Király (1919–2007), composer and ethnomusicologist of the Yugoslav avant-garde, based in Novi Sad. For her ensemble she built an instrument inspired by Slovenian customs and wrote a piece in graphic notation and language play, after Katalin Ladik's vocal disintegration. The harpist Lily Azur performed it at Oude Kerk Charlois in Rotterdam and in Oostum.
2023
Pondalize, Namegawa A two-month residency in Japan with Tisa Neža Herlec: playing with local musicians, learning their musical customs, and a workshop for local children and their parents. The material for the first album of their duo Miss Amanita Fly was written there.
2022
Recording of Gospa Gašparina, Susak With the sound artist Luka Seliškar she recorded Mrs Gašparina, one of the last remaining residents of the island of Susak, singing Sansego gradiću, an almost forgotten local song. It has lived on in their performances since, in new contexts.
2020
Multimedia Digestive Circuit For an experimental platform of Radio Študent (Cirkulacija2, 2020), a chain of analogue and digital stations through which her family's slides from the 1980s were projected, re-photographed and distorted until the image turned into real-time instructions for musicians. Their playing chose the next slide: a closed loop in which memory shifts, dissolves and is forgotten.
